The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for its annual British Academy Children’s Awards, which honour the very best in children’s media. Irish animation company JAM Media are delighted to announce that Series 3 of their show ‘Roy’ has received two nominations – in the Children’s Drama category and the Writer category for Declan de Barra.

This is the fourth and fifth BAFTA® nomination for ‘Roy,’ the CBBC/RTÉ co­production, created and produced by JAM Media, with the support of investment incentive from the Irish Government, and the participation of the Irish Film Board, Northern Ireland Screen and the European Regional Development Fund.

In 2012, JAM Media took home the BAFTA® for Best Children’s Drama for Series 2 of ‘Roy’ and are hoping to add to the mantlepiece again this year. The ceremony, presented by Doc Brown, will be held at the Roundhouse, London, on Sunday 23 November and all three co­founders of JAM Media, John Rice, Alan Shannon and Mark Cumberton will be in attendance.

Roy is a fly on the wall mockumentary, starring Simon Delaney and Cathy Belton, who are the real life parents to Ireland’s only cartoon boy. The magic of Roy is that despite his obvious physical differences, he is the same as any other 11 year old, trying to fit in and be accepted. The stories in Series 3 explore the tricky elements of growing up, and topics such as Cyber Bullying, obsessing over Computer Games and Parental Pressure, are told with the unique Roy charm and humour that has resonated with viewers in the UK, Ireland and beyond and is a trademark characteristic of all JAM Media shows.

Initially the brainchild of CCO of JAM Media, Alan Shannon, Roy first appeared as a thirty­something Dubliner, down on his luck, in an Irish Film Board ­ Frameworks scheme, funded short film entitled ‘Badly Drawn Roy’. The character had mass appeal, so it was time for this audience to grow and ‘Roy’ was born.

It was a wonderful surprise and quite timely, as we have just completed work on season 4 which will air next year. JAM Media are currently developing a pre­school version of ‘Roy’ called ‘Little Roy,’ which endeavours to capture the moments in a child’s development when they become lost in imaginative play, and will include a fully animated cartoon sequence where Little Roy disappears into his imagination. ‘Little Roy’ embraces all the winning elements of the existing 11 year old Roy brand; laugh out loud comedy, physical hi­jinks and emotional learning, but with an added dash of madcap humour and craziness. ‘Little Roy’ is ‘Roy’ with the brakes off.
