Course Name:Introduction to TVPaintEntry Requirements:This introductory course will provide participants with the knowledge and practice they need to create exciting 2D digital animations with TVPaint.Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course participants will have all the necessary knowledge to take a project from design through to final colour using TVPaint.

Course Content:

Exploring the TVPaint Interface
Creating custom brushes
Developing an understanding of the various drawing tools and panels
Tools for timing animation
Cleanup and paint
Tips and tricks

This course is hands-on and all participants will have access to TVPaint on the day.

Tutor Information:

Sean McCarron is a Canadian animator who has fifteen years experience in the animation industry.  He studied Classical Animation at Vancouver Film School and has worked in several studios in both Canada and Ireland.  He has been using TVPaint for the last five years, most recently as Lead Animator with Cartoon Saloon on the Oscar nominated feature film ‘Song of the Sea’.

Course Name:Introduction to Drawing Caricatures and Editorial CartoonsEntry Requirements:This introductory course is aimed at those with good basic drawing skills who have an interest in caricatures and editorial cartoons.Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course participants will be able to draw caricatures for events or magazines. Participants will also learn how to approach editorial cartoons.

Course Content:

This course will cover the basics of drawing caricatures, live demonstrations, marketing tips, how to promote yourself etc.

Tutor Information:

Following graduation from Ballyfermot College in 1989, Niall worked as an animator for many years on shows, shorts and features, such as ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’, ‘All Dogs Go To Heaven’ and Give Up Yer Aul Sins.’ In the year 2000 Niall quit animation to follow his true passion of doing caricatures full time. Widely regarded as the No1 caricaturist in Ireland, Niall enjoys sell-out exhibitions and has appeared on numerous Radio and TV programs including the Saturday Night Show and The Late Late Show and is currently the cartoonist for the Irish Independent Newspaper.

On completion of the course, participants will be able to assess the story potential of an idea, develop an idea into a script, understand and analyse story structure, write effective scenes, format scripts correctly & collaborate constructively with writers, development executives, producers etc.

Participant Profile:

This course is aimed at Visual Creatives and Animation Professionals who wish to develop/write their own projects OR collaborate more effectively with writers. There is a strong practical element to this course, which will include writing exercises and opportunities for participants to workshop their own short projects (Films or TV pilots).

Tutor Info:

A graduate of the University of Southern California’s MFA in Writing for Screen and Television, Maria O’Loughlin has over 18 year’s industry experience as a screenwriter, producer and script editor/consultant. A specialist in writing for animation, she has worked with all the major Irish animation studios including Monster Entertainment, Kavaleer Productions, JAM Media and Brown Bag Films. Some recent credits include “I’m a Monster”, “I’m a Creepy Crawly” and the BAFTA-nominated 3rd Season of “Roy” for CBBC. In 2014, she worked as Staff Writer on “Henry Hugglemonster” for Brown Bag Films/Disney Junior and also completed an IFB-supported feature script entitled “Snack Hamster” with Norton Virgien (“Doc Mc Sutffins”, “Rugrats”) attached as Director. She is currently represented by the Gotham Group in Los Angeles.

* There will also be one or two surprise guests to provide additional perspective and share industry experiences. TBA.

Course Content:This course will cover

  • Principles of Visual Storytelling.
  • The Storyboarding Process for Animation.
  • Storyboarding for different projects, target audiences and genres.
  • Project and Time Management.
  • Work Environment and Tools.
  • Good Professional Standards and Practices.
  • Using the Storyboard Pro Software: Introduction, Functionality, Artistry, Productivity and Delivery.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to create full sequences from word to image using Storyboard Pro. The participant will have all the necessary knowledge to be in a position to take a script and turning it into a professionally deliverable storyboard.

Participant Profile:

The course is aimed at budding professionals in animation and related industries who seek to further develop their skills in this area. It is also aimed to keen novices already interested in visual storytelling who are considering storyboarding as an endeavour. A good grasp of drawing skills as well as familiarity with some digital art package such as Adobe’s Photoshop or Discreet’s Sketchbook Pro is essential. Participants should bring a graphic tablet to be able to use the program to its maximum capacity.

Tutor Info:

Patrick O’Callaghan has worked in the animation industry for 8 years, most recently as the Art Director for Treehouse Republic. He is also as a very active freelance professional. Some of his storyboarding credits include Wild Grinders (Currently on NickToons), Cosmo, Fairytale Dropouts, Punky (S2), Chloe’s Closet and Epic Eric amongst others. He also works as a character artist for film and for in-development TV properties.
